April 5th Block Meeting Notes:
Park Clean-Up Day
Saturday, April 21st 10am
We will participate in the "Spring Into Your Park" clean-up day, put together by the PA Horticultural Society. Philadelphia Green will provide us with tools, t-shirts, gloves, snacks, trash bags & pickup. (Thanks Holly, for hooking us up with this!)
-On the agenda for that day: clean up trash, sweep streets, weed & prune if necessary, prep earth for grass seed, lay down peat moss, plant grass seed, set up fence/barrier/signs to prevent anyone from walking on the new grass seed until the seedlings are established.
-We missed the deadline to get free wood chips delivered, however, the Recycling Center at Fairmount Park has free compost, wood chips and horse manure for pick-up. The hours are Monday-Friday, 7:30 am - 3 pm, which is inconvenient, but maybe someday we can get out there with a pick-up truck and garbage cans, and get some of this great free stuff that could really benefit our park.

Grass planting
Phil has researched dog urine resistant grass and found 2 choices: Kentucky 31 (fescue)
www.fescue.com/ and Lolium perrene (perennial ryegrass) www.ryegrasses.com/ Both are priced around $30 for a 10 lb bag.
-Scott will look into which grass is the better choice for our park, and will determine how many bags we need, as well as how many bags of peat moss we will need. In addition, he will look into options of temporary fencing (height, color, price, etc). He will let us know how much this may cost. Last year we may have spent about $100 on grass seed alone. With only $25 in the Park fund, we will have to front the cost and make our money back at the Flea Market.
Electing a Park Manager
Scott was nominated Paolone Park Manager, and has accepted the position.
Flea Market & Block Party
Saturday, May 12th 10 am (with rain date May 19th)
-We will make flyers to post in the neighborhood, as well as advertise on PhillyBlog and Craigslist, closer to that date.
-Non-block residents can set up a table for $15
-Start sorting your basement treasures. Don’t have any? Why not sell hotdogs/pretzels/baked goods?
Dealing with dog poo
We all know there is a ton of it in the park and in the street. We need to figure out how to deter dog owners from outside the block from coming here and not taking the poo with them. The City signs we have posted don’t seem to deter them and it is hard to catch anyone in the act of abandoning their dog’s poo.
Suggestions brought up in the meeting:
-Have a “no dog policy” (aside from the dog owners on the block), and put up signs reflecting this, and tell people that no dogs are allowed in the park. In addition, it was suggested that we not spend the money and effort to lay grass seed if we will not do anything to stop the dogs from ruining it.
-Allow dogs, but put up signs letting people know that we neighbors take care of this park (not the city of phila) and request they respect the park: no dogs in the planters, no dog poo left behind.
-Speak up to people who bring their dogs here. Ask them if they plan on picking up their poo, request that they don’t allow their dogs in the planters.
Eyesore lot at 8th and Sears
-The siding of this rental house is falling off and blowing in the streets. The owner of the property is waiting for permits. Let’s all take the time to call L&I and file a complaint. Does anyone know the best number to call?
Eyesore at 7xx Sears
-This got zoning approval for a 3rd floor, yet has remained neglected and is deteriorating badly, and looks dangerous. What is the status? Has it been condemned? Will the city take it over and demolish it?
Passyunk Square Civic Association (PSCA) www.passyunk.org/
-Our neighborhood association holds its regular meetings on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 PM and its Zoning Meetings on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM. Meetings are held at the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center (Passyunk Ave at thingyinson St). This is a great resource for learning what’s new in the neighborhood. Does someone want to be the liaison that attends these meeting and reports the news?
Here is the scoop from the last PSCA mtg:
-The Citizens Alliance oversees broom cleaning done by court-directed community-service workers. Let’s arrange to supervise a crew and have them clean-up Paolone Park!
-The PSCA Clean Committee Happy Hour Fundraiser
Thursday, April 12th 6pm to 8pm
Pope on Passyunk East (P.O.P.E.)
Passyunk & thingyinson
$5 suggested donation
Drink specials ($2 yards), light snacks, and some S. Philly trivia...
Next Block Meeting Thursday May 3rd 7 pm
On the agenda:
Flea Market/Block Party
We will need to discuss kegs (How many, what kind, and what time to be delivered?)
