Free Composting Workshops! Give your garden or lawn a boost, conserve natural resources and protect the environment. Receive a free compost bin! The City of Philadelphia offers two different types of composting workshops.
Choose from a one-hour composting workshop that covers the basics of composting.
Or, take a two-hour Recycling Through Composting workshop. Details of both types of composting workshops are below: Upcoming One-hour Composting Workshops: Call Philadelphia County Cooperative Extension to register for this free program. Pre-registration is required! Call 215-471-2200
Upcoming Recycling Through Composting Workshops: Residents interested in attending a compost-training workshop must pre-register. Call (215) 686-5444, extension 2.
Anyone is welcome to attend as a guest and receive training and a manual, but only pre-registered Philadelphia residents presenting appropriate identification will be eligible to receive a back yard composter. If demand exceeds supply, priority will be given to the earliest registrants; the date on which the workshop is held does not affect availability.

Hey guys,
I called the number above and spoke to a really nice woman named Christine Tilles. She put me on their mailing list and I will be contacted when they solidify the spring schedule for this composting workshop. It is free to attend, and you get a free compost bin!
She said they usually take place in NE or W Philly b/c they maxed out Center City with compost bins. I told her I'm in South Philly & that there is a real resurgence here in terms of young environmentally minded people, and that our local neighborhood association (PSCA) was awarded grants enabling us to plant lots of trees in the neighborhood. She said she would contact them to see if they would like to host a composting workshop in our neighborhood. Cool!
I know we don't have any plans to compost in the park, but I hope to attempt to compost in my backyard. She said it is possible to do on cement, although requires more care. We'll see how it goes.

Nice work, Isabelle!
I'd be interested in checking out a composting workshop to see what it entails. Maybe once we learn more about it and can get a free container it will be something we do want to do after all in the park. Thanks!
Holly

Hey guys,
So, there is a tentative plan that Christine Tilles, Horticultural Educator, will conduct a compost work-shop on Tuesday, June 19th, at 7pm at the SPOAC, same place the PSCA holds their meetings. Mark it on your calender. She needs a minimum of 10 people to sign up. I will post more info when I get it.
